Walk into almost any bodega in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem or even TriBeCa and ask for grabba, and nobody behind the counter will blink. The Caribbean tobacco leaf went from a Jamaican street staple to a fixture of New York cannabis culture, a punchline in comedy and a growing business.

It has also landed in the middle of a darker conversation. Social media is full of "fetty grabba" warnings, the claim that leaf is being laced with fentanyl. No news outlet or lab has publicly confirmed fentanyl in grabba, but tainted smoke shop products are real: fentanyl in unlicensed weed and vapes in New York and Connecticut, and kratom and 7-OH deaths across the South.
